Subject:Masterlist: Star Trek AOS - Kirk/Spock

 All of my recommendations for the Kirk/Spock pairing in the Star Trek AOS fandom.

Fics

This Place at the Crossroads
 by alpha_hydra
Rating/Warning(s):
 Teen
Wordcount:  ~34,000
Genre: AU, Ensemble, drama
Summary: Starfleet intelligence says that Earth is decades away from developing warp-technology. Then again, Starfleet intell didn’t count on one James Tiberius Kirk getting anywhere near the issue.
Notes: This is a really neat idea for a story, executed well. We have Starfleet intrigue dogging Spock & Gaila while they assess Earth's civilization, Kirk getting a crew together to create a warp-capable ship, and Spock & Jim meet somewhere in the middle of it all. I'm kinda jonesing for a follow-up fic now.

Extra-curricular Activities
by awarrington
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~14,000
Genre: AU, Academy fic, first time, romance
Summary: Spock returns to the Academy from a tour of duty to find an intriguing cadet captures his attention.
Notes: I really love this Spock characterization - observing human interactions, a little unsure of himself, and equal parts confused and intrigued by Kirk. And yay for smart!Kirk.

Slow Beginnings
by awarrington
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~24,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, first time, friendship
Summary: After the defeat of the Narada and Spock's decision to stay with the Enterprise, he and Kirk have to learn to work together. Over the course of their five year mission, their friendship evolves.
Notes: The first 8,000 words or so of this fic had me peeved - the Kirk characterization just read off, too immature and frivolous for what we see at the end of the movie. Then someone (Uhura, perhaps) gave me a few raps with a clue stick and I realized that this is Kirk through judgmental-Spock eyes. As the story continues, we watch Spock reevaluate his understanding of Kirk as their friendship grows

Homecoming
by beedlebarg
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~20,000
Genre: Established relationship, amnesia, kidfic
Summary: Jim wakes after an attack to find everything changed
Notes: There really aren't words for how much I adore this story. 17 years gone, and the way Kirk bears up and just deals is so admirable and true to life. Yeah, there are a bunch of clichés here, but isn't a lot of life rather clichéd? The kids here are adorable (oh, teenage girls...), and Kirk's crush on his husband is delightful, as are his genuinely confused feelings on the whole matter. And I love how, despite the time elapsed, Jim and Bones are still the same, because their friendship is rock solid.

We Live in Detail Series
 by black_eyedgirl
Rating/Warning(s):
 Mature
Wordcount:  ~33,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, romance, angst, ensemble
Summary: The first three years of the rebooted ongoing mission. Destiny forced them back onto the right track but everything else takes work. Things come together and fall apart and come back together, over and over until it turns into a habit. Until the road stretches far up ahead, no matter what the obstacles along the way. [Kirk/Spock by the end, past Uhura/Spock, but mostly the story of Jim, his crew, his captaincy and his ship]
Notes: This is one of the best Kirk voices I've read, especially his internal thoughts. And the story of the adventures of the Enterprise and her crew are some of the more realistic I've read - I'd say this could actually be AOS the TV show's first seasons, except I don't think the professional writers are that clever. So, great characterization, great action plot, and the emotional plot that weaves between the two is just perfect.

So Wise We Grow
by captanddeastar
Rating/Warning(s):
 Mature
Wordcount:  81,000
Genre: kidfic, light angst, humor, romance
Summary: “Commander Spock, we have located your son,” the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock’s face that he’s never heard of this kid before in his life. “If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week.”
Notes: I am so in love with this fic. It's full of humor, without ever dipping into crack!fic, and avoids all of the typical problems of kidfic. It's cute, moves lightly without being light weight, and every reread makes me smile. Spock and Kirk's interactions are so believably Vulcan and human, and the developing connection between them (and the hilarious interplay of the two of them and Spock's son) is just right. Oh, and the rest of the ensemble cast is great, too.

Take Refuge in What You Know
by corpus_invictus
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~118,000
Genre: AU, major h/c, angst, drama, Academy fic
Summary: Kirk has moved into a apartment/house and wants to get to know his neighbors. He meets his neighbor Spock, a loner who suffers from extreme agoraphobia. Kirk thinks he's beautiful enigma.
Notes: The summary kept me away from this fic for a long time - which was a huge mistake. So, minispoilers (you get this info in the first 10,000 words or so): Spock's bondmate broke their bond, and he's basically spiraled down to the point where he has crazy panic attacks if he exits his apartment. He never finished his Academy degree. Kirk more or less accidentally barges into Spock's life, and, well, doesn't leave. The way their relationship develops - and the way Kirk doesn't just magically heal Spock's issues - is perfectly done.

Trance
by corpus_invictus
Rating/Warning(s):
 Mature
Wordcount:  2,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, h/c
Summary: So, you know how Vulcans can heal themselves by going into a healing trance? Right. Well, Spock gets injured and does that. Jim, being the smitten man he is (though Spock doesn't know that) sits with him in Sickbay while he's trancing it out. And, since Spock's unconscious, he talks to him. Says all manner of things he would never say to conscious Spock. Okay he doesn't know that the nature of the Vulcan healing trance means Spock can hear every word he says and will remember it when he wakes up.
Notes: A pretty adorable little one-shot.

Shine Like the Sun by kyliselle
Rating/Warning(s):
Mature
Wordcount: ~25,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, established relationship, amnesia, angst, H/C
Summary: An accident leaves Spock with amnesia. His last memory is bringing a cadet up on charges for cheating on the Kobayashi Maru - a cadet who, to his disgust, is now his bondmate.
Notes: This story piles on the angst, pauses, then throws more angst on the pile. I personally read Kirk & Spock here as a little OOC, but the angst is delicious enough that I don't mind.

Chaos Theory by ragdoll987
Rating/Warning(s):
 Teen
Wordcount:  ~8,500
Genre:  AU, pre-slash
Summary: Just like the Butterfly Effect, Jim Kirk flaps his outraged hand, and everything changes. Oh, and Amanda Grayson survives Vulcan. What happens after?
Notes:  A nice little AU that doesn't take things off-track...just makes things a little bit nicer for everyone's favorite human-Vulcan hybrid.

Zenith by rainbowstrlght
Fandom:
Star Trek AOS, fusion with Twilight (sorta)
Character/Pairing: Kirk/Spock, background Gaila/McCoy, Chekov/Sulu, Scotty/Uhura, Pike/Number One
Rating/Warning(s): Mature
Wordcount: 75,000
Genre: High School AU, Fusion, humor
Summary: When Winona Kirk finds love with the small-town sheriff of Riverside, Jim is uprooted for his high school senior year to the middle of nowhere. But once Jim arrives, he gets wrapped up in the local mystery of a series of crop circles, along with finding himself drawn to a peculiar and enigmatic group of kids - especially one in particular, named Spock. Danger ensues, as Kirk unravels the meaning behind the crop circles, and why Spock and his family live in Riverside.
Notes: Come live inside teenage Jim Kirk's head as he tries to figure out the mysteries of middle America's cornfields and an odd kid at his high school who always wears a skullcap. Yes, it's sort of a cracky premise, but the mystery keeps the pages turning, and the characterizations are wonderful. Don't let the Twilight fusion premise scare you off, because this fic is rather awesome. Also, the fanmix, Let's Talk About Spaceships by inkstain is amazing, as is the fanart by lamasart, so be sure to check out those too.

You'll Get There in the End (It Just Takes a While)
 by seperis
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~33,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, Mindmeld, angst, smut, romance
Summary: "Spock. Just say 'I don't trust Starfleet not to mess up the only captain in the fleet who I can train up to my expectations and enjoys running into danger wearing a blindfold as much as I do'."
Notes: Yeah, so this is a classic for the K/S ship in AOS. It's plotty, has great characterization, funny, zig-zags across time, and is hot. Go read now. (Also - ficlet sequel)

War Games
 by seperis
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~109,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, Established Relationship, Mission gone wrong
Summary: The sequel to You'll Get There in the End (It Just Takes a While). The Federation and the Romulan Empire have been on the verge of war for what sometimes feels like forever; this is the place where what passes for peace might end.
Notes: . Yes, this one clocks in at over 100,000 words. Epicness. I'd say the next Star Trek II should be based on this fic, but, well, it's too good and too complex for Hollywood. This is more massive Plot and World Building than Epic Romance, but the Kirk and Spock relationship is most certainly there, and the development of it is great. And Cadet T'Prina is possibly the best OC in fanfiction that I have ever read

Repeat Offender
 by seperis
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~6,300
Genre: Angst, Smut
Summary: After a bar, in Iowa.
Notes: The interaction & dialogue between Spock & Kirk - the way they open up to each other quietly about their pasts - is lovely here. Seperis has a very deft touch.

Stars Apart, Shine the Same
by sineala
Other Characters/Pairings:
Kirk/Spock Prime
Rating/Warning(s): Explicit
Wordcount:  ~8,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, "mind meld gave me feelings", first time, missing scene
Summary: It is the third mission of his command, and Captain James T. Kirk suspects he is going insane.
Notes: This is one of the classics of ST AOS, and for good reason - it takes the movie and runs with it, while incorporating little details from TOS. It's a smart story - a base that plenty of other fic from which plenty of other fics have been built.

Asymptote
 by tahariel
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~6,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, Smut
Summary: Prompt: K/S. So, this idea kind of hit me out of nowhere. Pretty much following the tradition of aliens-made-them-do-it [only kind of inverted], in which Kirk and Spock end up at a planet where they are not allowed to touch each other [due to religious issues, politeness protocol, whatever]. This makes Spock realize how many times a day, Kirk had been touching him, [his shoulder, pat at the back, random hugs, etc] and how much he had been enjoying those touches. In fact, Spock is a bit annoyed [angry!] that he's been deprived his daily ration of Kirk-touch. And when he tries to sneak in a touch, however subtle, the aliens get in the way. [Damn aliens!] This pretty much pushes his control to the limit. Then when the whole ordeal is over, Spock jumps Kirk in the conference room as soon as the briefing on the away mission is over because he cannot wait! \o/ Bonus: Kirk and Spock aren't together yet, so first time. Double bonus: Kirk has no clue what the hell going on with Spock until the jumping happens.
Notes: Spock angsting about Kirk - in a logical manner, of course.

.the god of frolic
by thisissirius
Rating/Warning(s):
 General
Wordcount:  ~2,000
Genre: Enterprise fic, established relationship, crack
Summary: He's yours. You know he's yours because he smells like yours
Notes: This is pretty redic (apologies), but something about Chris Pine's hair has always made me think of a dopey golden retriever.

strive seek find yield
by waldorph
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~68,000
Genre: massive AU, romance, light drama, humor
Summary: Spock is heir to the Federation throne, Jim is Prince of America because his fucking brother abdicated, and the Klingons are on the verge of blowing shit up--a love story.
Notes: This is crack fic done perfectly. I think I reread this fic about once a month because it's truly that good.

The Illogical (√π233/hy7) Series
by waldorph
Other Characters/Pairings:
Chapel/McCoy, Amanda/Sarek, Chekov/Sulu, Scotty/Uhura, Winona/George, Stonn/T'Pring, Aurelan/Sam Kirk, Number One/Pike
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~150,000
Genre: AU, Epic, Ensemble
Summary: Jim never takes up Pike's dare to do better. Close-canon movie AU, with touches of Good Will Hunting.
Notes: What do you say about a series that spans 150,000 words of the best smart!Kirk and takes up the story of just about everyone in the verse? This is waldorph's EPIC. Why haven't you read it yet?

Love Story
 by waldorph

Rating/Warning(s): Mature
Wordcount:  ~8,500 Genre: AU, crackfic, romance
Summary: We were both young, when I first saw you
Notes:  Kirk and Spock as Taylor Swift's Romeo and Juliet. Guess which one's which?

Screw Compromise
 by waldorph
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~2,000
Genre: Angst/drama, porn
Summary: Let me say in advance I am so sorry, and even screamlet doesn't know why I'm like this.
Notes: Uh, yeah. Short, bitter, and to the point. Don't pretend like the movie didn't it make it clear that their personalities (and the clash thereof) would make such an ending possible.

Bad Things With You
 by Anon
Rating/Warning(s):
 Explicit
Wordcount:  ~1,500
Genre: Enterprise fic
Summary: Kirk wants into Spock's pants but figures his usual approach won't work. So, knowing about Vulcan touch telepathy, he starts touching Spock (like on the shoulder or arm, etc.) at random, seemingly innocent moments and pushing all these mental images at him - fantasies of them together, pictures of Kirk naked, etc. Lather rinse and repeat until finally Spock can't stand it anymore and just drags him off the bridge to his room for hot sex.
Notes: Hot, hot, hot.

Untitled
 by Anon
Rating/Warning(s):
 Teen
Wordcount:  ~3,400
Genre: Teachers!AU
Summary: AU: Kirk and Spock are teachers - at university, working for a crappy high school, I don't know, make it happen. Maybe Kirk is unexpectedly a librarian? Who also coaches the track team? Or a history teacher?
Notes: This is in here because of the Sulu scene, which is absolutely awesome. And I love how chess is always the LDC with these two.

Vids

Must Be Dreaming
by bluefairy1113
(link to youtube)
Rating/Warning(s):
 Teen
Music: Must Be Dreaming by Frou Frou
Genre: Mindmeld gave me issues
Summary: This one actually has a story (a topic explored in many a fanfiction, but I dont really care). Unbeknownst to Kirk, some of Spock Prime's memories were transferred to him during the mind meld, and now Kirk has been having visions of another life, in which he and Spock were soulmates. He is disbelieving at first, but then he starts to fall in love with Spock of his own accord. Clips from Star Trek XI and TOS, song by Frou Frou.
Notes: This was the first vid I watched for the Star Trek AOS fandom, and, boy, did it set the expectations high for the rest of them! Great use of textures, effects, and splicing in footage from TOS to create a lovely little story in the vid.

Forget by heresluck
Rating/Warning(s):
 Teen
Music: The Chemical Brothers feat. Richard Ashcroft
Genre: Mindmeld gave me issues
Summary: Now I think I see the light.
Notes: This is one of the more brilliant vids I've seen ever, and one of the best of Star Trek fandom. Simply stunning use of scenes from AOS and TOS.

Poker Face
by talitha78
Rating/Warning(s):
 Teen
Music: Poker Face by Lady Gaga
Genre: Drama
Summary: I wanna roll with him, a hard pair we will be.
Notes: You know you're in good hands with this concept by the fifteen second mark, when little Spock's poker face crumbles for an instant.
